Altar of the Third Army

Trieste and Trieste Karst Monuments and historic buildings

At the top of the San Giusto hill visitors can make a true journey through the history of Trieste: within a few metres there are traces from Roman, medieval, modern and contemporary times.

Among them stands out the Altar of the Third Army, inaugurated in 1929 by its own commander, Duke of Aosta Emanuele Filiberto.

The altar was designed by architect Carlo Polli and made of white Istrian stone. It is enriched by a bas-relief depicting various military items and bears several inscriptions: “Isonzo” and “Piave”, in memory of the two main rivers where the army operated, and “The victorious arms were consecrated here by the Third Army under the command of Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy”.
