Austro-Hungarian Cemetery of Aurisina
A few kilometres from the open-air museum of Mount Ermada lies the Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Aurisina, which can be visited by the public.
Surrounded by a stone wall, the cemetery contains the remains of 1,934 Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell in the area between Monfalcone and Mount Ermada. Across the large lawn stand concrete crosses with nameplates bearing the names of the dead.
To the left of the entrance, some of the original gravestones have been preserved. In addition to the names of the fallen, they also bear important information such as military unit, decorations received, and date of death.Today, the Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Aurisina is well maintained thanks to the extraordinary work of several Austrian and German associations, supported organisationally and financially by the Austrian Black Cross. The office of the Black Cross currently responsible for the cemetery is based in Graz and works in collaboration with the Italian Defence office for the protection of military memory and heritage, known as Onorcaduti.
