Great War Museum of Gorizia

Gorizia, Isonzo Karst and Collio Museums and exhibitions

The Great War Museum of Gorizia is housed in the basements of two sixteenth-century buildings in Borgo Castello: Casa Dornberg and Casa Tasso.

Narrative and educational in nature, the museum aims above all to present everyday life for soldiers and civilians during the war. The story focuses on the Isonzo front while also addressing broader aspects of the conflict that help visitors understand its scale. The rich collection, arranged in nine rooms, includes uniforms, objects and relics from Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers, documents, models and numerous photographs. The room devoted to the city of Gorizia explores the experience of a city on the front line, while the life-size reconstruction of a trench allows visitors to feel the reality of the front, also thanks to the deafening ambient sounds that reproduce the noises of war. The final room, set up with materials from the Diaz collection as well, introduces the years following the war. The route ends with a focus on the memory of the conflict, from the small war cemeteries to the great military shrines.
