Magazzino 18
“Magazzino 18” is the name given to the collection of personal belongings that Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian exiles brought with them and deposited in the warehouses of Trieste’s Old Port after their arrival in the city.
For many years, these possessions — laden with memories and personal histories — were preserved and displayed in Warehouse 18, which became a symbol of this heritage, also thanks to the acclaimed theatrical production of the same name by Simone Cristicchi. Today, this extraordinary testimony to the Julian-Dalmatian Exodus can be seen in Warehouse 26, whose larger premises allow for the proper display of more than 2,000 cubic metres of furniture, work tools, everyday objects and private mementoes. The site will also host the future Museum of Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian Civilization, whose ethnographic section has already been established.
The warehouse can be visited during the guided tours organized twice a month by the Regional Institute for Istrian-Fiuman-Dalmatian Culture (I.R.C.I.), which also curates temporary exhibitions at its headquarters in the heart of Trieste, at Via Torino 8.
