Monte San Michele Great War Museum

Gorizia, Isonzo Karst and Collio Museums and exhibitions

Today the Monte San Michele Great War Museum offers a truly unique experience thanks to interactive multimedia tools and content in Italian and English.

The three rooms, completely redesigned in 2018, demonstrate how technology can enhance the communication of history. Inside, you will find war relics and two touchscreens with interactive 3D and 2D content, allowing you to explore the gun gallery on Cima 3 and the Lukachich Cave (the latter not accessible today) and, through a time cursor, discover maps, photographs, and historical information about the different fronts of the First World War.The heart of the exhibition, however, is the room devoted to virtual reality (VR 360°): VR stations equipped with headsets and headphones offer an immersive experience of the Isonzo front during the Great War. By listening to soldiers’ testimonies and war correspondents’ accounts, visitors can observe trenches under attack, the soldiers’ daily life, the treatment of the wounded in a military medical facility, witness the tragic gas attack of 29 June 1916, and fly over the Doberdò plateau aboard Francesco Baracca’s SPAD XIII aircraft. At the end of the visit, it is well worth heading to the panoramic terrace. Looking out over the magnificent landscape, visitors can still sense the strategic importance of this summit for controlling the surrounding territory.
