Mount Ermada Open-Air Museum from Medeazza
An itinerary to discover the last Austro-Hungarian defensive line of the First World War, built to defend Trieste.
The Mount Ermada Open-Air Museum route from Medeazza allows visitors to discover what remains of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's last defensive line. This area was fortified in 1915 and further strengthened in 1916, following the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, when Habsburg troops were forced to abandon the heights overlooking Monfalcone.
This itinerary leads to the Mount Cocco area, where numerous wartime remains can still be seen, including trenches and communication trenches carved into the Karst landscape. After passing Case Coisce, visitors can explore the Mount Cocco area with its numerous bunkers before returning to Case Coisce to complete the circular route around the Prince's Dolina.
Author's tip
Visitors wishing to extend the circular route and explore other sections of the cross-border open-air museum can continue from Mount Cocco along a gentle uphill trail to the Karl and Zita Caves, before reaching the summit area. From there, they can either continue towards Brestovica or descend to Ceroglie. In both cases, using two cars is recommended in order to return to Medeazza.
