Museum of the Jewish Community of Trieste “Carlo e Vera Wagner”
The Jewish Museum of Trieste, inaugurated in 1993, preserves an invaluable heritage for exploring the history of the local Jewish community from its medieval origins to the period following the Second World War.
The exhibition is arranged across several rooms where visitors can admire ritual objects from Trieste’s historic synagogues, valuable silverware, textiles, books and documents. An important section is dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust and the deportation of Trieste’s Jewish population during the Second World War. On display are personal belongings confiscated by the Nazis before deportation and returned to the Jewish Community in 2000 after decades of oblivion. Some of these artefacts are exhibited in the Museum, while a selection has been donated to the Civic Museum of the Risiera di San Sabba.
The multimedia content makes the visit more engaging, while information panels in Italian and English provide further insight into the history of each object on display.
