Redipuglia Multimedia Great War Museum

Gorizia, Isonzo Karst and Collio Museums and exhibitions

The multimedia Great War Museum, housed in the former railway station of Fogliano Redipuglia, is unique of its kind in Italy.

The events of the conflict are told by harnessing the power of images and the emotions that only photographs can convey, also thanks to carefully crafted augmented-reality reconstructions.

The interactive visit can be enjoyed on your own smartphone using QR codes or an NFC chip, or by following the stories told by six characters who come to life through augmented reality and interact with visitors: a Red Cross nurse, an ordinary Italian soldier, an ardito assault trooper, an Austrian soldier, an Alpino and the Duke of Aosta, made even more realistic through the use of his original voice.

For each year of the war, a vertical installation has also been created, accompanied by the front page of a period newspaper whose images come alive before the visitor’s eyes, a brief text on the progress of the war in Europe, an in-depth section on the Italian front and a photographic path specifically dedicated to that year, including some 3D images.

Completing the multimedia experience are three touch-screen stations that allow visitors to explore the museum’s rich photographic collection independently—more than 1,200 images—through a system of tags used to search for topics of interest.

The museum stands close to the monumental area that includes the Redipuglia Shrine, Colle Sant’Elia, the “House of the Third Army” Museum and the open-air museum in the XV Bersaglieri Dolina, making it the ideal place to begin or end a visit dedicated to the First World War. Audioguides for the Redipuglia Shrine and the open-air museum in the XV Bersaglieri Dolina can also be rented at the museum.
