1 Log pod Mangartom ‒ Bovec (Plezzo)

Walk of Peace
Linear route Scenic Family-friendly Cultural/historical interest Flora Fauna Insider tip

First easy stage of the “Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic” which combines a first approach to the traces of the Great War with the natural beauties of the alpine landscape.

A good part of the stage – which runs from Log pod Mangartom to Bovec – is located within the only Slovenian national park, the Triglavski narodni park, and along its route allows you to enjoy wide and scenic mountain views as well as the beauty of its hydrological formations (rivers, streams, gorges, and small waterfalls) and the richness of its wildlife. Along the way, there is also the possibility to spot fortifications and trenches now part of open-air museums that invite personal reflection on a First World War distant but still vividly present with its traces on the territory.

Author's tip

It is also interesting to visit the Kluže Fortress near Fort Hermann. The current appearance, dating back to 1882, was designed to oversee the Bovec area. Here, during the Isonzo front, rear units of the Austro-Hungarian army were stationed.

The Čelo Open-Air Museum is also worth a visit, with a magnificent view and visitable fortified Austro-Hungarian artillery positions.

Additional notes

If you choose to visit the Čelo Open-Air Museum, you climb towards the summit of Mount Svinjak where, after half an hour, the museum is located, then, returning to Kal-Koritnica, continue towards Golobar. Instead of crossing the footbridge over the Soča (Isonzo) river, continue along the right bank to the bridge over the Koritnica at Vodenca and from there towards Bovec.

Directions

The route starts from Log pod Mangartom, where it is possible to visit an Austro-Hungarian military cemetery with a monument to the two soldiers, and continues along the banks of the Koritnica and Možnica rivers and their characteristic gorges. You then reach the tunnel leading from the Kluže fortress and, continuing without leaving the river, passing the abandoned church of San Leonardo, you arrive at the crossroads that leads towards the Predil Pass on one side and towards Trenta on the other, where there is another Austro-Hungarian cemetery. Moving towards Trenta, the path deviates slightly to the right to lead to the Ravelnik Open-Air Museum before ending in Bovec, where it is possible to visit two private collections on the First World War.
