Walk of Peace
Linear route Refreshment stops available Family-friendly Cultural/historical interest Insider tip

Short walk suitable for every type of hiker that allows you to discover a rich heritage of testimonies of great importance.

Many important points are touched by this short stage that starts from San Martino del Carso, made famous by the poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, who dedicated one of his best-known poems to it, arriving at one of the most emblematic places of World War I memory: the Sacrario di Redipuglia. It is just one of the testimonies present in this small territorial area and is the largest Italian memorial dedicated to the fallen of the Great War. Moved from nearby tombs and cemeteries, over 100,000 soldiers rest within its 22 terraces. Important ceremonies are still held at this site on November 4, for the Unity Day, and June 2, for the Republic Day, with the presence of the highest state authorities.

After these, it continues to the road connecting Sagrado/Zagraj to Doberdò del Lago/Doberdob where, with a slight detour, it is possible to visit the Ungaretti Park. Continuing always on the CAI 77 path, you reach Polazzo/Polač. Another small detour allows, crossing the railway, to reach the Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Fogliano/Foljan. Returning to the Walk of Peace, you reach the homonymous visitor center in Redipuglia, also home to the Multimedia Museum, and nearby is the monumental area consisting of the Third Army House Museum (temporarily closed), Colle Sant'Elia, and the Sacrario.
