2 Bovec ‒ Kobarid
A mountain stage that leads hikers from the Julian Alps directly to Kobarid, one of the most renowned First World War locations.
This section of the Walk of Peace, from Bovec to Kobarid, is certainly suitable for trekking enthusiasts. They, adventuring through the mountains and valleys, among gorges and ravines, will discover not only the natural beauty of the area but also these two towns, which have become internationally known for the events that happened there during the First World War. Kobarid, in particular, became symbolic of the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, when Austro-German forces broke through the front after years of trench warfare and pushed Italian troops back to the Piave River. Artefacts and the historical dynamics that took place here during the Great War are very well documented and preserved in the museums and ossuaries that have been built in the territory.
Author's tip
Along the way, you can visit the Kozjak Waterfall and the Italian Ossuary.
A visit to the Walk of Peace Visitor Center is highly recommended.

Directions
The itinerary begins in the town of Bovec at the foot of Mount Rombon and the Kanin and continues to Vodenca at the confluence of the Koritnica and Soča Rivers. This is where the path crosses a suspended footbridge over the Soča River. After about 20 minutes, you’ll reach a second footbridge, near which there’s a restored mosaic dating back to the Habsburg era depicting the coat of arms of Bosnia and Herzegovina stands nearby. The itinerary continues up to the Golobar alpine pasture, where an impressive cross made of concrete was erected in 1916 by the soldiers of the 20th Hunters' Battalion (Jäger) of the Austro-Hungarian Army. The route continues to the Čez Utro mountain pass, descends to the abandoned Slatenik mountain hut and then follows the gullies to Predolina and the Zaprikraj Outdoor Museum. The trail then descends into the valley to villages at the foot of Mount Krn, passing the famous Kozjak Waterfall, and finally reaches the Italian Military Ossuary that overlooks Kobarid, where the stage ends.
