A stage running along the Italian-Slovenian border with a lively route showing how a communal and integrated present can be reborn from the remnants of war.

A stage rich in natural beauties that leads to historically and culturally important places. The village of Šmartno, established in the 16th century as a medieval fortification against the Turks and still surrounded by walls, overlooks the splendid wine-growing region of Brda (Slovenian Collio), also interesting for its food and wine offerings. From here, the route will continue to the slopes of Mount Sabotino and the city of Nova Gorica, at Piazza della Transalpina/Trg Evrope, a symbol of friendship among nations. During World War I, up to the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, Mount Sabotino played a significant strategic role within the Gorizia/Gorica defensive line, as evidenced by the many remains still scattered across its face. The entire area now features an open-air museum – the Peace Park – and a Visitor Center for the "Walk of Peace."

Author's tip

In Šmartno, the Hiša kulture and the Briška hiša are interesting.

To see is the Solkan (Salcano) railway bridge with the longest stone arch in the world.

A walk with a view over the Soča (Isonzo) leads to the open-air Museum of Mount Sabotino. The route continues along the Italian-Slovenian border markers to the ruins of the Church of San Valentino, then to the suspended Solkan bridge, and to the military cemetery reachable by a short detour. The stage concludes by reaching Piazza della Transalpina/Trg Evrope at the border between the cities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica.
