Coccau Customs Museum
The Coccau Customs Museum (Tarvisio) tells the story of borders and customs services, with a particular focus on the history of the Italian-Austrian border.
The museum is located at the Coccau border crossing, still one of the most important crossings between Italy and Austria, inside the former customs checkpoint building where border inspections were once carried out.
The numerous information panels, available in Italian, English, German and Slovenian, allow visitors to explore the evolution of borders from Roman times to the creation of the European Union, with particular attention to the post-war period and the unique characteristics of borders during the Cold War. Visitors can also view a range of historical artefacts, including customs officers’ manuals, uniforms, original signage and equipment used for inspecting goods.
