Monte Calvario and Gorizia Itinerary
The itinerary winding between Monte Calvario and Gorizia offers the chance to discover the many monuments built in the years following the First World War to commemorate the city’s annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.
This itinerary can be explored either by car or entirely on foot, following Stage 8 of the Walk of Peace. The route begins at the railway underpass dedicated to Aurelio Baruzzi, the first Italian soldier to enter the city on 8 August 1916 during the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo. From here, along the paths branching off from the centre of Piedimonte, visitors can reach the summit of Monte Calvario (240 m above sea level), where three monuments commemorating the Italian soldiers can be found: the Obelisk, the square with the Three Crosses, and the memorial stone dedicated to the Julian Volunteers.Descending along the opposite slope, marked by rows of cypress trees, lies the grave of Scipio Slataper. Upon entering the city and crossing the Ponte del Torrione, visitors can admire the Monument to the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo. Finally, in the city centre, the monuments located in the Parco della Rimembranza and the Public Gardens, dedicated to Enrico Toti and the Italian Infantryman, complete the itinerary.
