Mount Jôf di Somdogna First World War Itinerary

Julian Alps Itineraries and thematic parks
Round trip Scenic Cultural/historical interest Flora Summit route

A fascinating circular itinerary to discover the trenches and fortifications of the First World War in the heart of the Julian Alps.

The summit of Jôf di Somdogna (then known as Kopfach) (1,889 metres above sea level), an ideal vantage point from which to control the border, was occupied by the Italian army in 1915. Starting from Sella di Somdogna (1,389 metres above sea level) in the direction of Rifugio Grego, on the right a track along a grassy slope leads to CAI trail 651 and then to CAI trail 610 (on the left), where the first remains of trenches and military shelters can be seen. Once you reach the saddle at an altitude of 1,762 metres, turn left onto what was once a trench line and continue as far as the summit, passing the Kopfach shelter, which at the time was built as an observation post. The excursion continues on the opposite side: descending along CAI trail 652, you will see the remains of a large military shelter, an armoured tunnel, fortified trenches and the "Tomba del Mago". Continue along the same trail marker until the junction with CAI trail 611 (on the left), which leads to Rifugio Grego and the road back to Sella di Somdogna.
