Route of the Dogna Valley – The Plans line

An itinerary to discover the early twentieth-century fortifications along what was once the border, and the battles fought here during the First World War.

At the time, Val Dogna lay along the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and is therefore dotted with the remains of military fortifications, among which the Plans Line stands out. Starting from Dogna and following the military road, after 12 km you reach the fortified line, a barrier built across the valley to prevent any possible enemy advance. Rejoining the main road, after about 2 km you arrive at Plan dei Spadovai, a plateau where the remains of artillery positions, the ruins of a wartime village and the Chapel of the Gemona Alpine Battalion can still be seen. To return to the starting point, you need to retrace the same road.
