Sassari Brigade Memorial
Where the Sassari Brigade once fought, a memorial stone now stands in its honour.
The Brigade’s determination played a decisive role in the capture of the Trincea delle Frasche during the Fourth Battle of the Isonzo. Deeply impressed by their tenacity—and by the red collar tabs worn on their uniforms—the Austro-Hungarian troops nicknamed the soldiers of the Sassari Brigade Die Roten Teufel (“the Red Devils”).
The commemorative stone was originally inaugurated during the Fascist period. After the Second World War, however, it was rebuilt and reconsecrated during the National Gathering of Infantrymen held in Gorizia in May 1950. Particularly significant is the plaque placed at the summit of the monument, which records the Brigade’s heavy losses and honours between 1915 and 1918: 13,000 dead, 18,000 wounded, four Gold Medals awarded to the flags of the two regiments (the 151st and 152nd), nine individual Gold Medals, 286 Silver Medals, and 425 Bronze Medals.
